Mud Run

So this past Sunday I did the Mud Run with my brother, Roger, Mike and Leonard as a team. 10k run with mud, a few minor obstacles and a big river crossing. This had to be one of the best runs I've done to date. All the obstacles made the 10k go by so fast and I'm looking forward to doing it again next year.

We finished at 1:20:10 (33rd and 73rd overall out of 340), not bad considering a few of the guys on the team don't really run. We lost probably about 5 to 7 minutes at the start due to the bottlenecking.

1st Qtr Progress Report

Well I thought today would be a good day to put together an update on my goals for the year. Looking at them, all I can say is I'm in bad shape and need to pick up the slack.

2008 Competitions

Here's the list of races I plan on competing in this year with my target finish.

  1. Carlsbad Half Marathon - January 20th (1 hr 44 min) - Finished at 1:46:14
  2. La Jolla Half Marathon - April 27th (1 hr 55 min) - I'm backing out of this because Grappler's Quest is the following weekend. Sucks, but I have to.
  3. Camp Pendleton Mud Run - June 8th
  4. San Diego International Triathlon - June 29 (2 hrs 30 min)
  5. America's Finest City Half Marathon - August 17th (beat my 2007 time 1:54:13)

Fitness Goals

  1. Run 625 miles in 2008 (12 miles a week). As of March 31st 89.35 miles. Not good. I should have been around 144 by now.
  2. Maintain my weight between 170 - 175 lbs. So far so good. I've been as low as 167 lbs and as high as 176 lbs.
  3. Get my body fat under 10%. Haven't checked yet. I probably should set a date.
  4. 12,000 push ups in 2008. 1,604 as of March 31st.
  5. 12,000 pull ups in 2008. 1,945 as of March 31st.
  6. 12,000 sit ups in 2008. 769 as of March 31st.
  7. Be able to to pass the RKC snatch test by November. Haven't been practicing, but hopefully I can start it up again in the 2nd quarter.
  8. Stay healthy. Can't really say this has been one that I've been maintaining. I pulled my groin and my elbow popped...so I guess it's all about rehabbing.
Not too happy with my 1st quarter progress report. Doesn't look good, but I still have 3/4 of the year left to pick up the slack.

Carlsbad Half Marathon

Here's the recap of the day:

I wake up around 3am to eat breakfast and leave the house for Carlsbad around 5am. We get there about 5:45am and it's freezing outside. The gauge in my car says it's a nice 38 degrees outside and I'm not looking forward to the run. Luckily by the time the race starts it's maybe in the 40's.

I meet up with Ryan and we line up for the race, trying to get close to the 8:23 pace group. Once we start the pace group seems as if they're going sub 8 minute miles and get some distance between us. I tried to stick to the game plan and run a 8:20/mile for the first 3 miles and then pick it up after that. After the first mile of running an 8:20/mile I found myself picking up the pace and running an 8:00/mile pace and eventually catching up to the pace guy. Crazy thing though is according to my watch this dude is going way faster than his supposed 8:23 pace.

I eventually pass the pace guy and tried to keep a pace throughout the race.

So here's my official chip time and stats:

Finish: 1:46:14 (pace 8:07)

1st half split 6.6 mile: 54:37 (pace 8:17)

2nd half split 6.5 mile: 51:37 (pace 7:56)

Place: 859 out of 6,334

Men: 639 out of 2,632

Men 25 - 29 yrs old: 99 out of 358

Pretty stoked at my results. I think if I picked it up a little bit more in the 1st half I would have maybe had a shot at finishing around 1:44:00, but the slower pace at the beginning probably helped me warm up and paid dividends to finish the 2nd half strong.

According to my watch I finished at 1:46:19 (8:02/mile).

Per my watch:

1st mile - 8:22
2nd mile - 7:54
3rd mile - 8:07
4th mile - 7:55
5th mile - 8:12
6th mile - 8:01
7th mile - 8:06
8th mile - 7:52
9th mile - 7:52
10th mile - 8:09
11th mile - 8:14
12th mile - 8:01
13th mile - 7:52
Last .24 - 1:42

I can't figure out why my garmin doesn't sync up exactly with the course. It was supposed to be 13.1 miles but according to my watch I ran 13.24...go figure.

Overall I thought it was good race. I was able to finish under 1:50, but I wasn't able to get in at 1:44 which is fine. I told Ryan I'm retiring from running. Leaving me 2-0 in head to head races and 15-0 in NBA 2k. I might as well finish on top or pursue something new (ala MJ and baseball). HAHAHA...J/K.

FYI - Ryan smashed the race. He finished at 1:50:44 and would have finished faster had he not had to deal with some nasty shin splints. The guy was flying!

2008 Goals

2008 is a big year for me. Major milestone...the big 30! I decided that in 2008 I want to be as active as I possibly can and get into the best shape I can be in by training my ass. I've put together some pretty lofty goals for this year. The first half of my goals are races that I want to compete in. I'm excited about the races this year because I'll be tackling my first triathlon (international distance) and mud run. The second half of my goals relate to overall fitness. I think the thought of hitting 30 has been playing with my head and has motivated me to try and get into the best shape of my life.

2008 Competitions

Here's the list of races I plan on competing in this year with my target finish.

  1. Carlsbad Half Marathon - January 20th (1 hr 44 min)
  2. La Jolla Half Marathon - April 27th (1 hr 55 min)
  3. Camp Pendleton Mud Run - June 8th
  4. San Diego International Triathlon - June 29 (2 hrs 30 min)
  5. America's Finest City Half Marathon - August 17th (beat my 2007 time 1:54:13)

Fitness Goals

  1. Run 625 miles in 2008 (12 miles a week). I covered only 190 miles in 2007. Granted I only started running seriously the 2nd half of the year, but in 2008 I want to be consistent with my running.
  2. Maintain my weight between 170 - 175 lbs. In 2007 I ballooned up to 187 lbs but got my weight down to 170 lbs and have been maintaining it since.
  3. Get my body fat under 10%. I'm not sure what my body fat is at right now, but I know when I was in college I was down to 8%. It would nuts to get my body fat back down to what it was in college.
  4. 12,000 push ups in 2008.
  5. 12,000 pull ups in 2008.
  6. 12,000 sit ups in 2008.
  7. Be able to to pass the RKC snatch test by November. Based off of my weight I'd be doing anywhere from 52 to 56 snatches. The test is pretty expensive so I don't think I'll be able to go to one of Pavel's seminars to take the test but I'd like to see if I can pass the test.
  8. Stay healthy. I think I have some pretty tough goals for 2008 and there's no way I'm going to achieve them if I'm not healthy. Bumps and bruises are going to happen and it's on me to make sure I take care of my body.

So I guess that's it as far as goals go. I'm hoping to put out progress reports every quarter to see how I'm doing.
