7am on Saturdays is becoming a ritual now. Laird, Lee, Roger, Rino, TJ and myself coming out and training. Today was an odd day though. Mike came out and taught class and I unfortunately had to leave for Kaitlyn's first ballet class. In the time that I was there Mike showed some details to the leg drag pass and Laird and Lee showed me some De La Riva stuff.
Leg Dreg
- torreando is key
- if top leg comes in, leg drag
- if bottom leg comes in, scoop into leg drag
De La Riva
- kick and pull in (collar and sleeve control) to off balance
- drive shin/knee down to turn them
- pinch for omoplata

02.22.2011 - Training
It's a truism in BJJ that the moves work - you just have to have faith in them.
De La Riva Guard Work:
Lasso Sweep
- lasso needs to be over elbow
- bridge and drive leg across chest (deeper the better)
- berimbolo to the back if there
De La Riva Passing:
Leg Drag
- elbow knee (near hand controlling opponent's free leg)
- back step and step over (using far arm to control DLR hook)
- leg drag leg across hip
Other DLR passing from Monday:
- pivot on heel to turn foot out
- drive and work staple pass

02.08.2011 - Training
Worked on the following:
A couple of key notes:
- use your leg as a hook to pull them
- pull them on top of you then between your legs
- swing back on top if they open legs and take sidemount.
Worked on the Berimbolo roll from DLR:
Rafael sets it up at 1:33.
Key notes:
- control goes from belt to opposite hip
- eventually the hand controlling on the DLR side will switch to the other leg
What I can't figure out is how to create the momentum when they have strong control of the free leg.

De La Riva and Open Guard
Open Guard revisited:
- never over extend
- want knees at a 90 degree angle
- do not get stacked
- continue to circle (egg beater)
- always return to 90 degree
De La Riva notes:
- cross grip (preferred method)
- wrist control to wrist (same side) and collar control (think tomanagi)
- use shoulder to bridge to get deeper
- always keep them off balance by kicking leg away
- always control ankle
DLR sweeps:
1. Taking the back
- cross grip
- kick leg away
- drive leg deeper
- finish w/ the slide
2. Tomanagi sweep
- wrist control or wrist and lapel
- kick leg away
- use their momentum (when they step back into you) to sweep them
- make sure foot is on hip
- bring their wrists to their waist
3. Cobrinha to Waiter sweep
- cross grip
- rolle polle
- key is to get your head in between their legs
- will typically get stuck, but a matter of shifting to get the sweep
- insert knee for the waiter sweep

Reverse De La Riva
Was at the gym yesterday and got to roll a bit. I got stacked when I had a triangle and re-injured my neck. I really need to chill out, but all this guard stuff has got my head spinning. Areas of note:
From RDLR:
- switch to x-guard for single leg
- if they anchor go deep half guard
- remember to pull them into you
- manipulate knee

Garage Training
Got to train at the house.
Guillotine work from butterfly
- from head and arm control in butterfly
- push in for guillotine, lean to side and sweep
Guillotine from half guard (top position)
- sprawl
- dig ribs into neck
- other arm check top leg, look for opening
- dump truck to finish
Butterfly notes (using head and arm control)
- remember to elevate opponent's arm by turning elbow out and up
- do not necessarily need opponent's arm locked in the bend of neck. makes it easier for opponent to escape
Passing against Z-Guard
- grab foot and turn up to open for over the shoulder pass
- use elbow to pry it open and look for over the shoulder pass
De La Riva Sweep
- pass arm between their legs to your hand
- not sure if grabbing should be under or over my leg
- dive in between their legs and roll them over
De La Riva Sweep #2
- attack far arm
- turn knees to dump em
Reverse De La Riva
- remember to coax em to come to you by pulling them in w/ your hook
- hook legs w/ arms
- be sure to turn opponent's knee out to make sweep easier
Taking Back
- w/ no hooks, block same side arm (preferably elbow)
- other arm should be keeping you tight
- drive em to roll over their shoulder
- w/ harness walk em up to get hooks
Sidemount escape
- use pendulm when opponent is flat
- when curled, better to bridge
Fun day of picking apart certain trouble areas. Got to roll a little with my stiff neck. Played w/ the de la riva and starting to see openings. There is really no difference when using the de la riva when someone is standing or kneeling w/ knee up. Pretty excited.
Remember to attack left and right

Drill Day
Went to the gym with a stiff neck, but still gave it a go. Definitely went too cautious when I rolled, but it was for the best. There were some positions where my neck would just tingle and I'd stop or just tap to pressure on my neck. Conventional wisdom is to stop rolling and take some time off, but with all this Cobrinha stuff I'm learning I really don't think I can. I'll probably drill moves and roll light, but talking to Jeremy and drilling some positions has got my mind racing 100 mph.
Thoughts
- Spider seems to be a great start from open.
- Remember to kick out their far leg to open their base.
- Tri-pod, if they push leg down DLR
- If they defend DLR, Reverse DLR
- If they don't, sweep or inverted
So many combinations, but right now in my head all I can think of is: Spider - Tri-pod - DLR - Inverted. I also drilled the "rollie-pollie" movement and felt way smoother.
All I want to do is keep playing with this.
