Training - 7/7/09

Adrian, John Laird and Jonathan came over last night to train. Opened up with some half guard work. Person on bottom is looking to sweep, while the person on top is looking to pass. The person in stays until going with the other three guys and rotates out.

Showed some half guard stuff to the guys:

  • From half guard underhook (looking to take the back)
  • If they overhook - go to knees and take them down (tomahawk chop the legs)
  • If they base - roll them
  • If they take overhook out and base - shrug them up and take back again

Rolled a few rounds after.

Some notes:

- spider guard "wheel sweep", need to block the leg and use misdirection.
- deep half guard set up seems to be working well, especially after Mike's tip on using the outside leg to hook under.
- need to watch Tinguinha's spider guard and Robson's ultimate spider guard

Drill Day

Went to the gym with a stiff neck, but still gave it a go. Definitely went too cautious when I rolled, but it was for the best. There were some positions where my neck would just tingle and I'd stop or just tap to pressure on my neck. Conventional wisdom is to stop rolling and take some time off, but with all this Cobrinha stuff I'm learning I really don't think I can. I'll probably drill moves and roll light, but talking to Jeremy and drilling some positions has got my mind racing 100 mph.

Thoughts

- Spider seems to be a great start from open.
- Remember to kick out their far leg to open their base.
- Tri-pod, if they push leg down DLR
- If they defend DLR, Reverse DLR
- If they don't, sweep or inverted

So many combinations, but right now in my head all I can think of is: Spider - Tri-pod - DLR - Inverted. I also drilled the "rollie-pollie" movement and felt way smoother.

All I want to do is keep playing with this.

Spider Guard and X-Guard

Spider Guard

- feet in biceps
- spider man grip on sleeves

Sweep #1
- swing to get far leg
- should be between their legs
- extend and sweep
- kick em in the butt if needed

Take the back
- same as above, swing for far leg
- release grip and make sure both arms are free and between legs
- kick them out while grabbing tail to take back

Attack the leg
- swing as above
- opponent sits
- take knee

Other notes:

X-Guard
- remember to kick leg straight for entry
- when entering make sure knee is up into their bend of their knee
