02.01.2011 - Training

Worked takedowns.  Major keys for the two takedowns worked on:

1.  Make em dance til they step your way or open up
2.  Need to be under 'em
3.  Worked from collar and sleeve control

Fireman's carry

- key is to get under 'em
- pull and throw
- be upright don't get stapled

Backbreaker

- block leg
- clear body
- control pants

Other notes:

- stay on your toes more when in sidemount (hip to hip)

Pop goes the knee

Warm up:

2 min of flow rolling

This is where my knee popped. My knee felt sore last night and this morning and when I attempted an elevator sweep I felt a pop on the inside part of my knee. Took the rest of the morning off to watch.

Technique:

1. Sweep / takedown from butterfly guard (Rani Yahya @ 23:08)

- opponent puts knee in between mine
- outside arm cups the knee (right above the knee)
- use inside hand to turn hips and get body positioned on the outside leg. inside leg is trapping foot.
- chopping motion with shoulder (downward) to the side of knee
- head and chest must be on knee and thigh

options from here:

- opponent stands, go to single leg
- opponent stays kneeling, switch grips on leg and take back

2. Sit up guard sweep / takedown #2 (Rani Yahya @ 26:42)

- same situation as #1, but opponent turns knee and can not break balance
- switch grips and turn into opponent. Put butt in between his legs and shoulder must be behind the knee with head connected to his thigh
- stand up, using leg to trap his foot.

variation:

- reverse knee bar to trip him down. (shoot hips up)

I'm hoping the knee feels better this weekend. It felt good to bet going strong for 2 weeks.

Takedowns

Worked from standing with Mike:

- look for set ups for single leg/high crotch.
- escapes felt pretty good

Rolled with Vince and Kyle as well.

- look to set up triangle from hip bump
- guard passing feels good

Overall I thought today was a good day of rolling. I'm pumped about starting from standing. I think cause it's something I don't often do, it's very intriguing.

Takedowns

With Kaitlyn here now it seems as if I have to prioritize my time better and work with what I got in regards to time. With that said, I know training is going to get harder and harde. I saw it happen with my brother, Jay and he even warned me about getting some mat time in. Lucky for me I work no more than 10 minutes away from the gym and Mike's open at lunch and early mornings and thanks to Mike it looks like I'll be able to get a lot of mat time in. This week I've gone everyday and I feel that burn inside...you know the one where you just don't get enough and want to just keep coming back for more? Well here's what my schedule looks like.

Mondays and Wednesdays - lunch time. This seems like the best time for me to work on things that Mike has gone over on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as help out some of the new guys on techniques.

Tuesdays and Thursdays - 7am. Class time. It's a much more structured setting with more experienced guys and most importantly we roll with the gi. Warm up, drill, technique and roll. A lot more experienced guys in the morning which helps come rolling time.

Friday - lunch time. I'll call this day open mat, but with takedowns. Seems like Mike wants to start working more takedowns which is more than fine by me cause I've been dying to learn more takedowns and work my technique. Also seems like a good time to just pick people's brains and get some good rolling in.

So here's today's recap:

Technique:

- Rani Yahya takedowns from butt scoot. Mike showed lots of varieations. The only one 2 I can remember is the modified takedown that I do already but at a different angle and the heel hook / gable grip takedown.

- remember to look up this video to get the details!

Rolling:

- takedowns and takedown defense felt good, but maybe that's cause I don't really know anything.
- need to build my cardio up.
- need to build up my grip strength still.
- remember to create angles to attack.
- guard passing feels good.
- look into learning the de la riva.
- good rolling with Mike, Jeremy and Marlon

Takedowns

Worked on takedowns with Roger. The arm drag is very difficult to just go out and get. Mike pointed out you have to set it up with other moves like controlling the head.

He also showed us a new takedown where you shoot for the ankles. I like this one since I seem to get guillotined all the time. We'll probably focus on it later.

Another note is being able to work back and forth from single and double when I've secured a leg.
